I've been traveling long enough and using Lonely Planet guidebooks long enough to know their advantages and limitations. Fitting an entire country into an easy-to-carry guidebook (with pictures!) is an impossible task, and to their credit Lonely Planet does their best. The more I know about a country, the more limited I find their guides (see Lonely Planet Discover Japan) but there is always something of value.
I haven't been to Spain, but a Spain/Morocco trip is next on my wife's and my itinerary, so this "Lonely Planet Discover Spain" guide was a good place to start. I use Lonely Planet guides almost exclusively for pre-planning. I find them somewhat useless when I actually get in-country, but there picturesque descriptions and pretty pictures usually give a nice flavor of the country and always put a few things on my itinerary that I wasn't originally planning for.
All of the things you would expect are here: The Top 25 Experiences starting the Alhambra as #1 (of course). When I asked friends who had been to Spain what their advice was, they all said the same thing: "Buy your tickets to Alhambra early, months before you go." Lonely Planet gives the same advice.
There is only lip-service paid to some of Spain's famous festivals, like La Tomatina and the Fiesta de San Fermin (The Running of the Bulls), with no advice on what to do if you want to watch/participate. There are nice museum tidbits and information, such as most major museums being closed on Mondays. All of that is as expected.
