Lonely Planet is the largest travel guide book publisher in the world and is owned by BBC Worldwide. The company was bought from its founders, Maureen and Tony Wheeler, who wanted to spend more time travelling.
Pocket Amsterdam is divided into four sections, The first, the Quickstart Guide, gives a brief overview of the city : it highights a few of the city's attractions and briefly introduces the city's different districts. There's also an itinerary for a four day visit to Amsterdam.
The main section of the book would be 'Explore Amsterdam', which divides the city into eight districts : the City Centre; the Jordaan and Western Canals; the Southern Canal Belt; the Vondelpark and the Old South; De Pijp; Oosterpark and Around; Nieuwmarkt and Plantage; and the Harbour and the Eastern Docklands. The focus is on eating, drinking, the top sights, shopping and entertainment in each district. (There's also a map of the relevent district, and a pull-out map at the back of the book. On the reverse of that map, there's a bus, tram and metro map).
The final two sections are quite short, though useful. The Best of Amsterdam targets certains interests - it devotes a page or two to, for example, the whole city's best museums, parks and activities for kids. The Survival Guide covers some practical information - travelling to and from the airports, using the public transport and tipping.
A very useful guide-book. It's well-laid out, covers all the main tourist sites, the maps are clear and its size will make it very useful when you're out and about in the city. (It fits comfortably into the back pocket of a pair of jeans - life's so much easier when you don't have to rummage through a bag, looking for a bulky guide book). Very much recommended.

This guide is organized by neighborhood, which other reviewers found was a plus, but I would have done better with a guide by category, or even just an alphabetical index. With only 3 days in Amsterdam, and knowing specific things we definitely wanted to see, I didn't have a sense of neighborhoods and that wasn't important for me on this trip. I just wanted to quickly find what I was looking for without first having to figure out which neighborhood it was in. Like the Resistance Museum... or Rijsttafel restaurants... We ended up using google maps on our phones more than the book. If we'd had the Kindle version we could have searched that, but we'd specifically gotten a printed book to get away from our phones.
The information was great once we found it; the photos were beautiful; it was light and easy to carry; and other reviewers really liked the grouping by neighborhood, so I guess it just depends on which approach you prefer and how you're planning to use the book.
