I never thought I'd have an occasion to write these words, but these days, Image is at the top of my list of comic publishers, due to their newer titles, plus revivals of some of their older properties. Gee, it only took 20 years and a whole new generation of creators to get them there.
It's no stretch to say that, of the revivals, Prophet is the crown jewel. It's not a reimagining, not a reboot - no, these are actually the further adventures of Rob Liefeld's sci-fi hero of the `90s, but set thousands of years in the future. Using a numbering system that links them to Prophet's prior appearances, PROPHET VOLUME 2: BROTHERS collects issues 27 through 32. This new direction for the character is conceived by Brandon Graham, and co-written and illustrated by Graham and others. Jettisoning almost all of the elements that made Prophet a typically-laughable Liefeld creation, Graham has transformed the storyline into a science-fantasy more suited for Metal Hurlant. It's perhaps the most fascinating change in direction for a comic character that I've ever seen. The first volume was a whirlwind of seemingly disparate stories featuring various clones of John Prophet, as well as some peripheral characters, in a universe that was strange yet familiar, enormous yet isolated. In Volume 2, the various characters and situations start coming together, and we learn more of the events and references in the first volume. Graham introduces many bizarre new allies, enemies, and settings (well, new to *us*, at least), and there are mentions of, and actual appearances by, some of Liefeld's other `90s characters.
