“A wildly addicting read. You’ll love Rule, the man and the book! ” (
Cora Carmack, New York Times bestselling author of LOSING IT)
From the Back Cover
Opposites in every way . . . except the one that matters
Shaw Landon loved Rule Archer from the moment she laid eyes on him. Rule is everything a straight--A pre-med student like Shaw shouldn't want--and the only person she's never tried to please. She isn't afraid of his scary piercings and tattoos or his wild attitude. Though she knows that Rule is wrong for her, her heart just won't listen.
To a rebel like Rule Archer, Shaw Landon is a stuck-up, perfect princess-and his dead twin brother's girl. She lives by other people's rules; he makes his own. He doesn't have time for a good girl like Shaw-even if she's the only one who can see the person he truly is.
But a short skirt, too many birthday cocktails, and spilled secrets lead to a night neither can forget. Now, Shaw and Rule have to figure out how a girl like her and a guy like him are supposed to be together without destroying their love . . . or each other.
The first Marked Men novel in Jay Crownover's combustible New Adult series.

I'm definitely not above trying out a new indie writer. I prefer my indie books especially by an author I've never seen before to be .99 or better yet free, but to be honest the book cover drew me right in and I figured a dollar more was worth the hottie on the front. :)
With that being said I actually really enjoyed this book. It kept my attention and flowed quite well. The hero in all his bad boy-ness was hot, not quite smoldering...but hot. Shaw, the heroine, was likable, mature (given her age), and kept the whiny-ness to a minimum. I didn't quite grasp why a rich, beautiful girl was such a high school outcast but it was pretty irrelevant.
The supporting characters were good, the banter was good, the passion and angst were good...but it wasn't, "cant put it down-think about it every minute-great." It was simply good. However the potential for "downright freaking fantastic" was most certainly present.
For the criticism...let me say I am not what I'd call an editing snob, meaning I can easily overlook bad grammar and misspelled words. If you can't...then maybe wait for someone to lend this to you. Ms. Crownover seems to be the queen of run on sentences. And there were a few times when the author said "he or she" multiple times in one sentence but was talking about two different people. It made me have to back track and figure out who she was talking about. There was definitely a lack of editing. I think having had a few friends run through this book could have caught many mistakes. I would recommend that Ms Crownover lower the price of this book until a revised edition with proper editing is released. Also there were a few slow, boring parts that I found myself skipping BUT it didn't take away from the story, perhaps I'm just inpatient.
There was a lot to like about this book, but mostly what I really liked was the lead characters. Both Shaw and Rule were interesting, likable, and engaging characters. This was told from their alternating POV. Shaw was not some weak female, she was strong, she fought for what she wanted, and stood up for what she believed in. She was great, she had her morals, boundaries and she stuck to them, if only she had stood up to her parents earlier, but that was part of her story. But one thing I don't think was explained very well about her was why she was so unpopular at high school - and this was a key point as to why she became involved in this family. Rule was very interesting; he reminded me a lot of Brian from Rock Me, misunderstood by parents, came across as rough, but ultimately a softie for the girl he wants who does not want him to change.
Very early on in the story I wanted to know what was going to happen and where everything was leading. A lot of this story is similar to a lot of other contemporary romances out there - `good' girl likes `bad' boy, parents don't approve, there is an obsessive ex, and both hero and heroine have `issues'. What was different about this one, what made it stand out, were a couple of great points. Although Rule has going through tough times with his family ultimately they were a loving family. Rule had a brother and father who cared deeply for him, and a mother who just needed to take care of her own issues who then would. I liked that a part of this story was actually how a family that was great can go through a huge rough patch but get through it.
