If I ever work up the courage to try out my driving skills on British roads, this is the book I want to take along! Years and years ago, my wife and I did an England-Ireland-Scotland bus tour. I was enchanted by the lovely, picturesque English countryside and all the wonderful small towns and villages where time seemed to have stood still. For any one wanting to see the "real" England at their own pace, this 2010 Dorling Kindersley guide is ideal.
BACK ROADS GREAT BRITAIN offers up expert advice on "25 leisurely drives (with) scenic routes, charming hotels and authentic regional cuisine." The drives range from 1-2 day hops to longer 5-6 days romps; destinations run the gamut from the tip of Cornwall to the north of Scotland. Among the spots described are Beachy Head, Henley-on-Thames, Cambridge, Norwich, York, Lindisfarne Island, Rosslyn Chapel, St. Andrews, Loch Lomond and Aberdeen.
After a 17-page U.K. travel summary that includes info on driving, where to stay, where to eat and other "practical information," each drive section details highlights of that particular drive, the best time of year to make the drive, road conditions, local attractions, a road map and so on. For example, Drive #1 - a 4-5 day trip from St. Ives to Tavistock - takes up nine pages with a two-page color map of the Lizard Point/South Cornwall Coast, information on planning your drive and seven pages devoted to short but insightful descriptions of St. Ives, Zennor, Pendeen, Porthcurno, Mousehole and other towns, villages and attractions.
Then too BACK ROADS GREAT BRITAIN is visually quite pleasing with dozens of color maps and hundreds of color photographs, large and small, depicting rustic villages, scenic land- and sea-scapes, etc. Every page is an inducement to jump on a plane and go!
