Good ol' Justice League Dark. A title that started out on a great premise of the DC Universes list of B and C list magic/occult figures to tackle the more mystical side of things, whereas the Justice League really do not excel in. The first writer of the series Peter Milligan was good I think, and then Jeff Lemire took over and made the series pretty incredible. While Lemire does stay on as writer, he is now joined by Ray Fawkes as co-writer/plotter for the series, so Lemire can focus on the "Trinity War" issues in the next volume. What we get is two stand alone tales that are good on their own, but this third volume lacks something.
JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK VOL.3: THE DEATH OF MAGIC collects issues #14 - #21. Issue #14 is a stand alone/aftermath issue of Frankenstein, Amaya, and Black Orchid exploring the house of Mysteries. Issues #15 - #18 deal with the "Death of Magic" arc, and issues #19 - #21 is the "Horror City" arc.
After the conclusion in Justice League Dark Vol. 2: The Books of Magic (The New 52) (Jla (Justice League of America) (Graphic Novels)), the books are not what the JLD thought they were; instead, they are a gateway to another world filled with magical properties, and yet, the world is governed and controlled by the technological city of Epoch, with the cities guardian against magic Vikar to uphold the authority. And oddly enough, the League has gone through some odd physical changes when in this new world! With the JLD now involved, it means all out war between magic and technology, as well as restoring the balance of power in this world, before it destroys everything.
This volume collects issues 14-21.
Justice League Dark makes a superhero team out of some of the DCU's mystics, mages, and monsters. In the previous volume Jeff Lemire took over writing duties and made it a very adventurous series with John Constantine as the lead and had a large cast that was handled well. He writes the opening issue/chapter, 14, as a transition from the previous "Books of Magic" epic to the "Death of Magic" tale. Steve Trevor of A.R.G.U.S. (DC trying to capitalize Marvel's success of acronym organizations) exchanges words with Constantine about how his team failed with their deal for the magic team to get the books of magic so John could get a a bit of unsupervised time in the black room, where A.R.G.U.S. keeps all of it's magical treasures. Meanwhile, JLD members Amethyst, Black Orchid, and Frankenstein wander John's House of Mysteries, mysteries that prove to be more dangerous than one would think. Lemire does a good job of balancing setting up John and Steve butting heads on how to go after the lost Zatanna and Tim Hunter from some weird occurrence from the books of magic, which turn out not to be magic, and the hijinks of the trio lost in the house of mystery.
The rest of this volume have Jeff Lemire listed as co-writer with Ray Fawkes, but from interviews and knowing Lemire's schedule got really busy around this time, it is more believable that Fawkes was doing the writing with input from Lemire. Issues 15-18 cover the four part story "The Death of Magic". Constantine works with a magic expert of Trevor's to chase little Timothy Hunter and backwards magic talker Zatanna into a pocket dimension. Constantine brings Madame Xanadu, Frankenstein, Black Orchid, and Deadman along to help save the lost members.
