National Geographic did a great job on this guide. I live/work in Barcelona one month of each year and I have read just about every Barcelona tour guide that has been written in recent years. I actually prefer these walking guides to other, more general, guidebooks since they offer a unique perspective. The best things in life are indeed free and Barcelona is a city best experienced on foot exploring the various neighborhoods and their sights, sounds, smells, and tastes (many of which are free).
There are some good insider tips in the book that took me some time to find on my own travels through various trips. The guide has outstanding information and photos of many of Barcelona’s most famous sites, however, it also has lots of information only the locals would know. I love how they break the book up by neighborhoods: Barri Gotic, La Rambla & El Raval, the waterfront (La Barceloneta and Port Vell), La Ribera, Passeig de Gracia, La Sagrada Familia to Park Guell, Camp Nou to Tibidabo, and Montjuic.
Whether your interests are art (Miro, Picasso, Dali, etc.), Modernista architecture, nature, or food, etc. this guide has you covered. There are also short sections on travel essentials, hotels and a language guide as well as special sections for travel in one day, one weekend, a weekend with kids, etc. They offer whirlwind tours for those with only a day or two. Also tours by day/night and for even those seeking the best cuisine. They then offer more extensive neighborhood tours of the eight broad neighborhoods/districts mentioned above.
Including the map of the various Metro (underground subway lines) inside the back cover of the guide is a nice touch.
