Let me start this review right off the bat by saying that I initially wasn't interested in this title when it was announced. It had seemed to me like Marvel was running out of ideas, but I decided to give the first issue a try. I can honestly say that I'm glad I did. Brian Michael Bendis has managed to create a really compelling series. I was a fan of his Avengers work, but I must admit that he has a knack for drawing stories out a bit longer than they need to be. This is really prevalent in his later Avengers storylines, and any time he writes an event series (House of M, Secret Invasion). So, while I have a love/hate relationship with his work, I have to admit that this series is perfectly suited to his style of writing. Here's the basic gist; in the aftermath of Avengers vs. X-men, Cyclops was imprisoned for the murder of Charles Xavier while under the influence of the Phoenix force. He then became a fugitive/freedom fighter for mutant rights. Fearing that his actions will lead to a full-scale war between humans and mutants, Beast travels back in time to bring the original five X-men into the present, hoping to make Cyclops see the error of his ways. Here's where the book gets really interesting. It's pretty cool to see the teenage X-men deal with their future selves, while trying to adapt to the way the world has changed. All five teens pretty much act the way you would expect them too, given the circumstances they find themselves in. Most interesting is young Scott Summers/ Cyclops encountering his future self. Can you imagine how it would feel to find out that you had become the very thing you swore to fight against? To know that you had killed your own teacher, the man who was like a father to you? And to see your future self in cahoots with your arch-nemesis, Magneto? Woo-boy!
In a ploy to gain new readers that echoes DC's "event" comic FLASHPOINT (a steaming pile of awful) and their reset-button initiative of the New 52, Marvel seemed to adopt a similar technique since despite their comics were still making more money (thanks to their consistent $3.99 price tag as opposed to DC's friendlier $2.99), they weren't selling as many copies as DC. Thus was born Marvel's "event" comic AVENGERS VS X-MEN (another steaming pile of awful), and this opened up not so much of a reset button as a renumbering of some existing titles combining with new titles and new creative teams they called Marvel NOW!. With Marvel NOW! came some awful new titles (such as Kieron Gillen's IRON MAN), and a major shift in their two big team book franchises and the creative teams. Jonathan Hickman took over for Brian Michael Bendis' AVENGERS titles (the flagship as well as NEW AVENGERS), and Bendis took over UNCANNY X-MEN and created a new X-title, the super-hyphenated ALL-NEW X-MEN. The premise and promise of ALL-NEW X-MEN is that it would bring the five original teenaged X-Men (Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel, and Iceman) out of the past and into the current post-AVX timeline to potentially help undo the damage done to the mutant cause by Cyclops during AVX. The result is an immensely readable book that is probably the most consistently well done of all of the Marvel NOW titles.
To have Bendis on this title gives it the youthful, conversational quality it needs to bring the original five into the current era, although it sometimes gets a little confusing as to exactly how many years it's been.
