About the Author
Ben Counter is the author of the Soul Drinkers and Grey Knights series, and is one of Black Library’s most popular Warhammer 40,000 authors. He has written RPG supplements and comic books as well as novels. He is a fanatical painter of miniatures, a pursuit which has won him his most prized possession: a prestigious Golden Demon award. He lives in Portsmouth, England, where he can sometimes be seen indulging his enthusiasm for amateur dramatics on the local stage.

This book is the story of Darnath Lysander, First Captain of the Imperial Fists, who was lost in the warp, stranded on Malodrax, a Chaos planet in more sense than one and managed to come back to the Imperium a thousand years later. He then returned to Malodrax with a punitive expedition to exact vengeance on those that had captured and tormented him and his fellow-brothers. While the bare bones of this story are already known, Ben Counter manages nevertheless to pick it up and make it into something entertaining, even if not entirely original.
Some of the ideas included in this Space Marines Battles title are similar to those found in other stories, while reassembled in ways that make them original. One example is the fortress forge of Kulgarde and its lord, the Iron Warrior Warsmith Kraegon Thul. This reminded me of the Siege of Castellax where another of the Iron Warriors Great Companies had converted a whole world into an arsenal that builds and supplies all sorts of weapons for the Chaos Space Marines and their Black Crusades. One of the originalities (there are others as well) in Malodrax is the emphasis on daemon-possessed and feral war machines.
Another feature is to have three stories running side by side in alternate chapters. One is the story of Lysander's current revenge expedition. The other is the story of what happened during the first one, and his reluctance to mention exactly what he had to do to free his surviving brothers and get away from the damned planet. A third strand is the story of another and previous Imperial visitor and his war band.
