This review is for this Premium reprint of the 2E AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide, I have already reviewed the Premium reprint of the Player's Handbook and most of my comments for the PHB (1989 edition vs 1995 edition in terms of artwork, presentation, quality) hold true for this book too. By the way, this book is based on the 1995 edition of the 2nd Edition DMG.
The 2nd Edition Dungeon Master's guide was meant to "shadow" the Player's Handbook and it shows, the chapters are arranged the same way, many of the tables are the same, etc. The design intent seemed to be that the editors didn't want the DM to be flipping back and forth about two books at the same time. On the other hand, this "shadow" approach resulted in a much weaker work, in my own opinion, probably the weakest core rulebook in the 2nd Edition AD&D rules set, and maybe the most lacking DMG in any edition of D&D. The "operational" aspect of being the DM, how to run a game, how to handle disputes, rules lawyering are glossed over, although there are some useful pieces on balancing out treasure awards, how make book keeping manageable etc. As a DM, I mainly picked up how to run a game from the Basic D&D game, and a new DM who has nothing to start from but this Dungeon Master's Guide may be excused for feeling a bit lost, as a lot of the useful stuff were apparently moved to the "DMGR1:Campaign Guide and Catacombs Sourcebook" splatbook.
I would also point out something I noticed about the DMG, which would be the slight plug in the introduction for whatever edition of introductory RPG game TSR happened to have out at the time, in 1989, it was the Red Box Basic D&D game.
