Historical epics aren't something I try to avoid, but likewise haven't been something I actively seek out. A couple years ago if I had been told two such stories would jump straight into my top ten favorite manga of all time I'd have been skeptical to say the least.
Of course I'm bringing it up because that's exactly what happened. First was Kaoru Mori's incredible historical romance featuring tribal life in Central Asia in the late 19th century, A Bride's Story. Now we have an equally impressive tale of a very different sort as Makoto Yukimura takes us to the waters around England in the 11th century to meet the Normanni, now referred to as Vikings.
The series follows a young warrior looking for revenge, and wonderfully conveys details of the way of life of the time while buildings a strong, character driven narrative. I don't know much about vikings and can't really speak to the accuracy of the details presented, but everything certainly comes across as carefully and thoroughly researched underneath the larger than life action and characters pulling us along. Integrated explanations of customs, political considerations and the harshness of the land they live in all add a lot of depth to Thorfinn's story and the world he inhabits.
The art is breathtaking. It has intricate detail, great flow and perspective that really convey a sense of scope, clean, powerful action, and some of the best character expressions and body language I've ever come across.
Vinland Saga is simply phenomenal and this high quality 450+ page hardbound volume gives us a lot to love. I absolutely can't wait for the next book. Highly recommended.

Great manga which earns 5 stars - but don't buy from Amazon which earns 0 stars. I preordered this book months ago from Amazon and have given up and bought the book from Barnes and Noble. Would be nice if Amazon gave a reason for the continual delays with this book.
