Classic Comic Press and publisher Charles Pelto has been issuing a stream of high quality comic strip collections in oversized trade formats. They are all beautiful and highly recommended. Now they have released their first Hard Cover Collection RUSTY RILEY Volume One.
In my humble opinion that could not have picked a more worthy start to this new format. Frank Goodwin was not just a good comic artist, but a master of illustration. Besides his work here and the earlier Connie comic strip he spent much time doing commercial and magazine illustrations. His line work in this volume in this book is both powerful and poetic.
The first 50 pages of this 342 page tome are devoted to features about Frank Goodwin and his work including an introduction by current comic legend Howard Chaykin, an interview with Goodwin's daughter, information about his life and many illustrations some in full color.
Next we get a run of almost two years worth of daily strips starting at the very beginning January 26, 1948 to November 28, 1949. The Amazon listing says January 26, 1948 to November 28, 1848 but that is incorrect. What you have is two daily strips to a single page for almost 300 pages or 600 strips. To reduce the art to more then two strips to a page would do a disservice to this art.
Howard Chaykin's introduction while being very complimentary to the art of Mr. Goodwin makes to it sound like the writing in the comic strip was not quite worthy. While not being the SLAM BANG non-stop action of a Dick Tracy strip I found the quiet rural life stories to be quite charming and a excellent change of pace. The Rusty stories feature a fawcet of American life which was not featured in any strip except for maybe the wild parodies of Little Abner.
When Classic Comics Press announced that they were reprinting Rusty Riley, my heart nearly skipped a beat. Finally, someone found it necessary to reprint this long lost gem! Unfortunately, I never got to read it first hand, though I’ve been a fan of its author Frank Godwin for a long time, and even have a couple of original strips at home. But never before had I been able to read the strip entirely before this book (which is case enough to give it 5 stars already).
Now, you must bear in mind that reproducing Frank Godwin’s art is a very difficult task, because he inked with a pen and used a cross-hatching technique to make his drawings look almost like an engraving. And Godwin is to me, the greatest pen and ink artist ever!
I have to say that the strip in this book is reproduced from newspaper tearsheets, and the printing back then wasn’t the best ever, considering the newsprint paper used (which absorbed and/or blotted the ink, making fine details either disappear or appear as thick, smudgy lines), and didn’t always reproduce faithfully. If you add to that the fact that Rusty Riley is a virtually unknown strip by many, not to mention Frank Godwin, whom no one remembers anymore, it’s short of a miracle if you find any available material to use at all. Taking all these considerations into mind, it’s almost unbelievable to have any book reprinting this hardly remembered strip from yesteryear. As the material used here comes from the newspapers, and though not perfect, it’s actually much better than previous material CCP has used on other series, and even better than some of the material IDW and FB have used on some of their books reprinting other comic strips.
