Ever stood in front of a closet full of clothes, trying to find something to wear? Ever traded in a perfectly good car for...another car? Ever killed some time talking on your cell phone while standing in line to get a newer version of the same phone? Ever gone shopping just to relax? If you answered ?yes? to any of those questions, you might be rich.
No, you probably don?t feel rich. Rich is the other guy. Rich is having more than you currently have. But you can be rich and not feel it. And that?s the problem. Andy is convinced that most of us are richer than we think. We just aren?t very good at it. It?s one thing to be rich. Andy wants to help us all be good at it!

How to Be Rich by Andy Stanley is not your “get-rich” book. That was the impression I had when I first saw the book, and was not keen on it. But it is not what I thought it was. A closer look reveals that the author has made a paradigm shift in his definition of “rich” which really initiated me into the book. And it was that particular reason why I asked for an advance review copy.
Instead of offering tips on how to get rich, the author appeals to the heart of the reader to live a lifestyle that is consistent with the teachings of the Bible, and also following the examples of the early Christians. Christians are to be generous with what we have, and strive to be a blessing to others by our “planned” and “sacrificial” giving.
Andy Stanley has pointed out that the book is the result of a series of sermons preached to members of the congregation he is leading. The message is relevant and timely.

I’ve often wondered how to be rich. Now, after reading this book by Andy Stanley, I have discovered the secret. In fact, the more I read through the book the richer I became. By the end of the book I was rolling about in my riches and faced with the new problem posed by Andy Stanley, which is, what should I do with my wealth?
The book is not actually about how to get rich. It is about how to be rich, once you admit to the uncomfortable reality that you are already rich. It is about how to be good at being rich towards others. It is about learning to place your hope not in riches, but in him who richly provides. It is about creating a giving strategy which stretches you out of your comfort zone and demonstrates that your hope is not in your ability to hoard. It is about selfless generosity which allows you to take hold of life as it was meant to be lived.
Each year in the lead up to Christmas, the author’s church North Point Ministries runs a Be Rich campaign. The 2013 campaign, according to my calculations, resulted in gifts of more than $170 per attender to about 80 small local and overseas charities and schools, just over one shoebox per attender to the Operation Christmas Child program, and 1.4 hours per attender in time volunteered at local charities.
The book includes a small group video discussion guide based on the DVDs which can be purchased with the book. Further video content can be located on the How to be Rich website and the various North Point Ministries websites. In my view the book and associated resources provide an outstanding example of how churches can cultivate a culture of generosity.
