I am normally a huge fan of Lonely Planet guide books, so I was pretty surprised how disappointed I was by their Greek Islands coverage. First off - the information that's there is not bad by any means. The main attractions are covered nicely, I like their taste in hotels and restaurants (and their whole travel philosophy in general), and the writing is fine.

It's just that there could be so much... more. They basically ripped the "Greek Islands" section out of their Greece travel guide, slapped a new cover on it and called it a day. Instead, they should've made it bigger and better. Unfortunately - especially for the less famous islands - coverage outside of the main towns is often just a brief rundown of destinations, with little detail on what each one is like and what's worth your time.

There is decent advice on how to travel between islands, but not so much for getting around once you're ON the island. Some provide bus or taxi info, which is great (even when it's precious little detail), but often there's neither - it's inconsistent. On many islands, walking or hiking is a fantastically scenic way to see the island (Tinos comes to mind), but this guide - unlike virtually every other Lonely Planet guide - gives very few specifics on details like distance, time, and elevation gain/loss, even on the few "must do" hikes that are mentioned (nor does it say where to find this information). Other Lonely Planet books also feature DIY walking tour itineraries or driving tours for the more picturesque towns and regions, but I think I only counted one or two here, which is a shame, since it's a neat feature and this is really the perfect destination for it.
