Let me start by saying I didn't like Surrender to Me. Hunter is a very alpha hero - we are talking all out, no holds bar alpha. He is a dominant and when he finds Kata, he immediately recognizes the submissive nature in her, even though she denies it. That is all fine and dandy. I love alpha heroes, if done well. An early description of Hunter:
She could decorate the house however she wanted, name the pets, choose the vacations. He'd give her a lot of latitude during their married life, but he was in charge when it came to sex and her safety.
Or:
"Your obedience goes straight to my cock honey."
Okay - sometimes reading about an alpha hero like this can be fun. But I don't feel like Hunter is a good hero at all.
First, I don't believe in love at first sight. Lust, instant attraction? Sure. Love - knowing you want to be with this person forever after knowing them for less than one hour, or even 24 hours? No.
So how do you follow up a deliciously decadent erotic bestseller? With another one even more erotic, more decadent and more delicious. Hunter is a man of extreme desires and sharing a beautiful woman for a night with a close friend is not beyond his realm of experience. Kata has a birthday wish and Hunter is here to help fulfill her fantasy.
But what he didn't expect is the way this beauty gets under his skin and into his heart. With one look Hunter is no longer interested in sharing and uses his own maneuvers to get this woman all to himself. This is going to be more than a one night stand but Kata is just not ready to play along. She comes with her own baggage; an overbearing and dominant stepfather, a very ill mother who cowers to his every demand, sisters who think they know what is best for her and Hunter's past catching up with him in the form of an unknown killer aiming for her and no understanding of why or who he is. Mix in a hasty marriage, a menage with a stranger, overbearing relatives and lots of hot, sweaty sex and you have a really great novel.
Shayla Black always comes through for her readers. Her ability to combine a suspenseful story and then ease into powerful and sometimes overwhelming passion is the trademark of her novels. Her writing is creative, colorful, intelligent and entertaining. She brings to life characters that are unforgettable and, even better, they will carry on into the next story of this series.
