Jim Steranko is one of the most interesting men in the world, a magician, escape artist, ad man, musician, he's done it all.
His work on S.H.I.E.L.D. stands out as some of the best comics of their era, bringing in influences from the pop art movement and challenging the norms of comics. We see work that dares to be different and try something new, work that is subtle and overt at the same time. And best of all, work that is Brilliant.
This collection collects all of Steranko's run on Nick Fury and what a treat it is. The characters are well written and stories larger than life and yet still on a level of closeness.
Some background info, Lee and Kirby wanted to ride off the success of the show the Man from U.N.C.l.E. with an idea called the Man called D.E.A.T.H. starring Nick Fury. The idea was found lacking and shield was made instead, but the two drawn pages were given to Steranko to ink as a tryout ( and are included as a bonus in this book)
Steranko's Shield was a whole different entity compared to the rest of Marvel at the time. Stories with twists that only made sense later, stories with politics and intrigue. This was good stuff. We see the fight between Nick Fury and Hydra, the war with the Yellow claw, and ask Who is Scorpio?
Best of all, unlike a previous collection, this volume has the proper coloring and the art has been restored so we can see it as was originally intended.
There are many stories about this run of comics but you need to read it yourself to truly appreciate them. To see the scenes that upset the CCA (comics code authority, the censorship board of comics) this really was a groundbreaking and envelope pushing comic.
The art if of a style many have tried and failed to duplicate, its just that unique.
The year of 1966 represented the height of the espionage craze in video entertainment. The fifth Bond entry, Thunderball, was released the prior year and You Only Live Twice was being produced with great fanfare. The Man From UNCLE was launched by NBC in 1964 and spawned a sister show in 1966. UNCLE was alone as a spy-themed series in 1964, but within a couple of years, 10 such shows were being carried leading ABC to pay a record price to bring the British espionage vehicle, The Avengers, to American TV in March 0f 66.
Marvel's House of Ideas, ever quick to spot and join a trend, promoted WW II hero Nick Fury to Colonel of the Supreme Headquarters International Espionage Law-Enforcement Division in August 1965. This unimportant series in a minor title (Strange Tales) was given a shot in the arm when Stan Lee assigned then unknown Jim Steranko to replace Jack "King" Kirby as illustrator. Within a few issues, Lee made the even more uncharacteristic decision to allow the newcomer to write the SHIELD stories as well.
"Thus began the legend of Jim Steranko," says AM Viturtia in one of the contributions to this volume. "The world of comics has never been the same." Steranko's inspiration came from James Bond novels and the aesthetic of Salvador Dali (See the cover to issue 7). His graphic story influences include Will Eisner's panel breakdowns, Jack Kirby's narrative drive and Wally Wood's double-lighting effects. Marvel's Larry Hama remembers his own reaction to the strip: "I was blown out of my socks. It looked so fresh and vibrant and it was utterly cool. It made me want to do stories just like it."
I had a similar reaction as a teen-age comic book reader. Steranko's drawings just seemed to jump off the page and his style evolved with each new issue.
