THE COINCIDENCE OF CALLIE & KAYDEN
For Kayden, suffering in silence was the only way to survive. If he was lucky, he could keep his head down, do as he was told, and make it through the day. But one night it seemed like his luck-and his life-might finally end . . . until an angel named Callie appeared just in time to rescue him.
Callie has never believed in luck. Not since her twelfth birthday when everything was taken from her. After the worst was over, she locked up her feelings and vowed never to tell anyone what happened. Now, six years later, she continues to struggle with the painful secret that threatens to consume her.
When fate lands Kayden and Callie at the same college, Kayden is determined to get to know the beautiful girl who changed his destiny. Quiet and reserved, Callie still fears letting anyone else into her world. But Kayden is certain that Callie has come back into his life for a reason. And the more he tries to be a part of her life, the more he realizes that, this time, it's Callie who needs to be saved . . . 3.5 stars There has been this theme running through contemporary NA romance this year which is basically Female heroine is messed up due to some trauma, which she doesn't want to talk about, male hero tries to save her by trying to get her to open up but also has his own hidden issues. I like these books they have been done well with, Easy, On Dublin Street, Sea of Tranquillity, Charade, The Edge of Never, just to name a few. But I have been getting the feeling from the past couple that with each one the author is trying to make their character just a bit more messed up then the previous `it' book. This book took a slight twist on that by not making the Hero and Heroine any more messed than what I have come to expect, but this time the author decided to make both their friends just as messed up also.
At the beginning of this book all these characters having such issues was a bit of a downer for me, and I found the beginning a little dragging and draining because of that. It took a while for there to be any ray of light in the book, usually that comes from the best friend, but because they were a bit messed up themselves it was not there. But slowing Callie and Kayden, and their best friends, Seth and Luke started to worm their way into my heart and I loved were the story lead. All four are very complex characters and all have their own secrets and scars. I wanted to know all the secrets and I wanted to find out where the story went.
One thing I loved was that there was no instant love, but rather this very slow build-up, first with friendship, and then ever so slowly with trust. It made the book so much better. There was obviously an attraction, but it did not take the `let's get together because we are messed up' route that a lot are taking.
In the existence of our lives, there is a single coincidence that brings us together and for a moment, our hearts beat as one.
This book was so heartwrenching and heartwarming at the same time. A chance encounter brings Callie to Kayden's rescue. A coincidental meeting at college, begins their surprising friendship/relationship. They are both hiding tragedies and scars that have shaped their views on their lives and future. But despite the attraction to each other, both are terrified of feelings, intimacy, and even touch so it is not easy to move forward and build trust. His best friend Luke and her new friend Seth are also affected by their pasts and the quartet become an unlikely support for each other. I loved these characters and how they interacted and were there for each other.
My heart broke for both Callie and Kayden and how deep their wounds affected them. They both had such emotional and physical symptoms of their tragic pasts. I was emotionally invested in every small victory that Callie and Kayden made together. I loved how protective they became of each other despite being afraid to face their own demons. But together they begin to realize what it is to truly live and feel.
Callie: It's like I'm not me anymore, like he's changed me into a girl who thinks about the possibilities for life and love.
Kayden: I realize that maybe I'm the one avoiding her because she makes me feel things I'm not used to; the dirty dreams, the protectiveness, the way my stupid heart starts to beat like it's finally alive.
Kayden: The way I feel is irreversible, overtaken, wanted, needed, connected. I'll never be able to let it go.
Kayden: "Callie, you're the only person that'e ever made me feel happy about anything.
