Poison Princess (Arcana Chronicles) by Kresely Cole is a surprisingly dark read. The opening format is quite creepy in how the story unfolds, then told in first person narrative by the h, Evangeline (Evie). Evie is a 16 y/o girl from Sterling, LA who lives the lavish lifestyle of the rich and privileged. She is a designer wearing cheerleader in the elite crowd and dates the most popular, rich, BMOC football player. On the exterior, she leads the life that most teenage girls would covet. Internally, she is haunted, plagued by debilitating visions, and nightmares of evil, desolate, and gruesome deaths. She struggles to keep it together in front of her friends and hide her secrets. Adding to that, Evie is developing powers that's scaring her, questioning her own sanity. Enter Cajun bad boy delinquent from the wrong side of town, Jackson Devereaux. The new kid in school with a bad rep and a set of stormy eyes that's lasered on Evie. When Evie and Jack meet, they get off on the wrong foot with the typical haughty rich girl and bitter poor boy interactions until................................
The Flash devastates, changing everything, changing them, and destroying life as they know it, leaving a wasteland behind. Evie realizes her visions were of this happening. Adding to this, the voices in her head begins. The world is turned upside down. It's do or die survival. There are The Bagmen (similar to Wendigos) who prey and feed on people. Then there's the evil militia overpowering, capturing, and torturing where ever they go. Lets throw in the slavers and the cannibals for good measure too. With odds stacked against them in a harsh world, Evie and Jackson must leave Louisiana to fight for an uncertain future.
Poison Princess is a tale that completely captured my heart and soul. Capturing me from as soon as the prologue began... it kept me tangled in a frenzied web of wanting more and more. Even as I neared the last pages of the book I never wanted it to end. I needed to (and still need to) know more and I'd gladly devour another thousand pages of Evie, Jackson and The Arcana Chronicles.
Easily the most unique concept in paranormal / Fantasy / Young Adult I have ever experienced. In fact the oxford dictionary simply doesn't contain a word amazing enough to describe how I feel about this book nor how I long for the continuation of this series.
Evie is divine ~ She's quirky and sweet. A phenomenal character and I adore her to the point of obsession. She's has absolutely nothing about her that I don't love. She isn't a normal naggy teenager and the way she views life and it's challenges are so mature that I often forget that's she's only 16 years old and under normal circumstances she would be way to young a character for my liking. But I couldn't find a single irate feeling towards her. Not for her age, not her attitude towards her lot in life, not the circumstances that lead her towards her journey. I can't think of one thing that makes me not want to like her. She's fantastic and her character development is suburb!
Jackson ~ hehe... bad boy to the bone, but sugar sweet in the marrow... I loved him too. He didn't frustrate me, didn't leave me angry or questioning his choices. I freaking loved him and his sexy Cajan accent. Another young character who by my usual terms, I should love as much but I simply do. Again, like Evie, He's mature and all man. He kept himself open but at the same time stayed wonderfully mysterious.
